What Is the CBSE Two-Exam System?

Under reforms linked to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, CBSE introduced a two-board-exam structure for Class 10 in 2026. The first (main) exam was held between February and March, and a second exam ("Phase 2" or "Second Board Exam") was held in May 2026 for students who wanted to improve their marks in up to three subjects, as well as for students placed in the compartment category after Phase 1.

Important Dates

  • Phase 1 Exam: 17 February 2026 - 11 March 2026
  • Phase 1 Result Declared: 15 April 2026
  • Phase 2 (Second Board) Exam: 15 May 2026 - 21 May 2026
  • Phase 2 Result Declared: 18 July 2026
  • Photocopy of Answer Sheets Window (after Phase 2 result): Expected to open in the third week of June 2026 as per earlier CBSE guidance; exact 2026 dates for the post-Phase-2 window were not confirmed in available sources at the time of writing
  • Verification and Re-evaluation Window: Opens after the relevant result is declared; exact 2026 dates not officially confirmed in available sources

Note: Some window dates above are based on CBSE's earlier published policy for the two-exam system rather than a fresh official notice for 2026. Students should confirm exact dates on the official CBSE website before applying.

Phase 1 Result Highlights (Declared 15 April 2026)

CategoryPass Percentage
Overall93.70%
Girls94.99%
Boys92.69%

The overall pass percentage was marginally higher than the previous year's 93.66%. As is typical, girls outperformed boys in pass percentage. CBSE has discontinued releasing a formal toppers' list or individual rankings; scorecards show only marks/grades secured by each candidate.

Phase 2 (Second Board Exam) Result Highlights (Declared 18 July 2026)

  • Phase 2 exams were held for students seeking improvement in up to three subjects and for students in the compartment category after Phase 1.
  • Over 6 lakh students appeared for the Phase 2 exam, of which over 5 lakh had opted for improvement and over 80,000 appeared under the compartment category, as reported around the time of the exam.
  • Science was reported to be the most commonly chosen subject among Phase 2 candidates.
  • Detailed Phase 2 pass percentage and category-wise statistics were not available in the sources reviewed at the time of writing. Students should check the official CBSE result portal or press release for final Phase 2 statistics.

Passing Marks Criteria

To pass the CBSE Class 10 exam, a student needs to secure a minimum of 33% marks in the theory paper and 33% in internal assessment (which includes project work and other internal components) for each subject.

  • Date of Birth (may be required on some result portals)

What to Do After Checking Your Result

  • Save your scorecard: Download and keep multiple copies (digital and printed) of your result/marksheet.
  • Photocopy of answer sheets: Students who want to review their evaluated answer sheets can apply for a photocopy once the window opens, on payment of a fee per subject (amount announced by CBSE when the window opens).
  • Verification of marks: Checks for totalling errors and unevaluated questions; does not involve re-reading of answers.
  • Re-evaluation: Available only for students who have already reviewed their photocopy and believe specific answers were incorrectly assessed. Re-evaluated marks can increase or decrease - if marks decrease, the lower marks become final.
  • Correction of errors: If there is an error in personal or academic details on the scorecard, students can approach CBSE for correction and a fresh scorecard.

Note: CBSE's stated policy is that re-evaluation for Phase 2 papers is available only after the Phase 2 result is declared, not before.
