The selection process consists of scrutiny of applications and bio-data at the district level for consideration and recommendation by a selection committee based on performance, followed by appointment approved at the government level.

Any member of a political party or affiliated organisation is not eligible to apply. Applicants must submit a declaration regarding non-involvement in political parties and criminal cases. Applications received after 28 October 2026 (5:00 PM) will not be considered under any circumstances. The tenure is for 2 years or up to 68 years of age, whichever is earlier, and can be extended year by year for up to two years based on work performance. Re-appointment is not permitted. The state government may remove the Ombudsman based on unsatisfactory work performance upon the selection committee's recommendation.
